Belated Resolutions

2016

So I know what you're thinking, it's the 4th of January why are you only making your New Years resolutions now?
Well before you jump to conclusions about my laziness and whatnot let me just say I wanted to have a think about it. A nice long think.
I don't want to throw together a loud of bogus resolutions that look flowery and are overflowing with positive niceties  and festive excitement about 2016. I needed to have a little time to reflect on the negatives too. The things I did wrong, the places in my life that need adjustment, the habits I don't wish to carry on into the new year. I wanted to metaphorically pick up the old sticky sweet wrappers from my brain and bin them all... in the recycling bin of course O_o (protect the environment kids!!)

Here we go,
a little letter to me about my future:

  1. So to start off let's just cut right to the chase, you take life way too seriously. Please just cut it out. Stop it, just stop.
  2. Enjoy (almost) everything you do, Let's be real studying probability and statistics is never going to be an enjoyable moment for you, but push through it girl. So yeah enjoy what you do, and do it with a cringy-ass smile on your face for the added effect.
  3. On a more serious note, let these words be engraved into your consciousness like an annoying television ad that is irritatingly catchy - Do Not let others take credit for your work! If you put in the effort you deserve the recognition.
  4. Find out what your passionate about. Work towards your own goals, don't spend your days fixing up someone else's and losing yourself along the way.
  5. Do things because you want to, don't live your life to please other people.
  6. Selflessness needs limitations. At the end of the day each decision in your life is YOUR decision so put your own desires as priority.
  7. Search for what you truly believe in, no half-hearted intentions or willful blindness allowed.
  8. Don't be so hard on yourself, you are in fact NOT a robot. Your brain fuel is exhaustible give yourself a chance to reboot. Some days you're not going to be in the mood to do squat and that's cool too.
  9. Now that we've finally got all the negative shit out of the way lets crack open a can of positive vibes. Adopt a positive and hopeful outlook on the future. If you're unsure of how a situation is going to turn out always assume the best.
  10. Enough small talk, time is of the essence, spend it wisely. Engage in deep and meaningful conversations that inspire you. Spend more time with family. Surround yourself with people that love and support you.
  11. Listen to the stories of strangers. Broaden your understanding of the world. As a wise friend of mine once said "i've had my whole life to sit in my own head", hearing other people's experiences can give you a whole new perspective- sort of like them optical illusions ( who knew that duck was really a rabbit)
  12. Back to basics- don't get lost in the twists and turns of busy political projects and mindful philosophical investigations. Eating is important. Sleeping is good too.

All in all, you did good kiddo.

Remember,
Lighten up, breath more and stay focused.

  3. This is the perfect approach to resolutions. I love your point about not being so hard on yourself. We aren't perfect. As long as we try, it's okay. :]
